‘The past is another country and they do things differently there…’ Not so very long ago The Thames was a thriving commercial artery and lining its route were the dockyards that brought exotic products like spices and jute from India and sugar and fruit from the West Indies. Down this artery came not just goods for sale but also people from different lands and cultures. Through the dockyard, the unstoppable energy of trade and commerce fused people together and enabled them to achieve their goals. In this exhibition of oils and watercolours, Terry Scales lifts the veil on the stretch of river from Deptford to the Peninsula and we can once again glimpse the hustle and bustle of another country. Included in this exhibition, as Terry celebrates over 40 years of living in Greenwich are rarely seen paintings of Greenwich life including ‘Skaters at The Old Naval College’ and the mysterious ‘Lassell Street’.
